History
Parnell was founded as a Maori community in the early 1800s and was put up for sale in 1841. Although it is known as "Auckland's first suburbs," it still has several historical buildings such as Ewelme Cottage, Kinder House, St Stephens Chapel, St Mary's Church, and St John the Baptist Church, as well as several other residential and commercial structures. Les Harvey purchased and rebuilt a vast section of decaying old buildings and shops in Parnell in the 1960s, which was later converted into restaurants, cafes, artisan shops, and boutiques and is today known as Parnell Village. Parnell Road eventually gained a reputation for upscale clothing stores, classy restaurants, and dealer art galleries.
